Abstract
A rapid progress in periodontitis studies using mice has been observed recently. Although studies frequently use a tooth ligatureinduced periodontitis (LIP) mouse model, no studies on mouse strain for the application of this model exists. The present study aimed to determine whether the mouse strain used affected the efficacy of the model. The maxillary left second molar of the ICR, BALB/ C, and C57BL/6 mice were ligated using 6-0 black silk for 14 days. After 14 days, the maxillary bone was extracted to analyze alveolar bone loss and periodontal tissue damage. Alveolar bone loss occurred more significantly in all LIP groups than in the control group.
Furthermore, damaged periodontal tissue was observed in the LIP group of ICR, BALB/C and C57BL/6 mice. However, there was no significant difference in alveolar bone loss and periodontal tissue damage between the mouse strains. These results indicate that similar findings can be obtained in periodontitis study regardless of the mouse strain used. Thus, this suggests that ICR, BALB/C, and C57BL/6 mice are all suitable LIP experimental animal models.
